I think they're doing it to cover their asses and not get sued, more or less. Although I think they need to instate a a harsh penalty system for anyone who abuses this feature.

I know. It pisses me off that this seems to be a strictly one-way deal that screws over all of the fandom writers and artists, among many other people who post adult content. The only way I could see benefits coming on our end would be the fact that since our stuff was flagged, it'd cover our butts for any potential lawsuits. It's not like you're going to get banned for being flagged, but I could definitely see this act driving several more groups away from Livejournal. (I'm sure that'll make those blackmailing cronies happy.)

The funny thing is, despite the fact that censorship throughout our whole society is "to protect the kids", you know they're just doing it to meet the approval of stuck-up prudes and religious zealots. Everyone knows kids aren't stupid. They'll figure out how to wiggle through the loopholes if they want to get access to something badly enough.

I find one thing rather interesting about the whole flagging idea - what a convenient way for LJ to track all the porn on their site. Now it's even easier to find the illegal content. GOOD JOB 6A.

Yeah. It's just.. adlkjad. *sigh* Kids are going to lie about their age and people are going to flag stuff that's not flag-worthy.

The only thing that's positive about this is that at least people can cover their own asses. If people flag their fanfic communities or journals as "adult content", people can't sue them if Little Joe or Sally lies about their age and sees th3 p0rn.

I can't wait until my LJ paid account times out. I'm not going anywhere, because I have nine kajillion friends here, but I'll be damned if I'm going to give LJ any more money, or have anyone do it in my name.
